Glorious Goodwood: the Sky’s the limit

slby JACK MILNER Glorious Goodwood gives us a week of racing akin to the quality of Royal Ascot but without the pomp and ceremony: a beautiful combination for yours truly. There are group races for all ages over all distances with the highlight undoubtedly being the Group One Sussex Stakes on Wednesday. Although there is no Frankel to saunter to success, DAWN APPROACH looks the next equine superstar and should stamp his authority on Toronado once more after spanking him in the 2,000 Guineas and out-battling him at Royal Ascot.

SADDLERS ROCK will look to defend his crown in the Goodwood Cup and he ran a creditable race before fading in the closing stages of the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot. The trip proved to be the better of him there and the flat-out two miles should suit him much better.

The Nassau Stakes is one of the biggest races of the season for fillies and is likely to see 1000 Guineas heroine SKY LANTERN try and bounce back after her controversial Falmouth Stakes defeat. The three year olds get bundles of weight and that could be the key to the chances of beating last year’s winner The Fugue.

The two big handicaps of the week are the Betfred Mile and the Stewards Cup and both are synonymous for their vast fields. They are real conundrums for punters to try and solve. WENTWORTH and CAPE PERON look to be the big players in the mile and I’ve earmarked REX IMPERATOR and SHROPSHIRE for The Stewards Cup.
