Notebook: Horses to follow May 10

LOOK out for a couple of notebook horses running tomorrow. COPACOBANA goes in the opener at Wolverhampton and should take all the beating while GENRES, who made a good impression at Lingfield on his debut, runs at Windsor under Ryan Moore. In the past week other notebook horses MILE HIGH and PIAZON ran quite well in hot company at Chester. Mile High was thrown in at the deep end in the Cheshire Oaks and finished fifth at 33/1, while Piazon had a troubled passage and did well to finish so close. Both are worth sticking with. Here are some more horses to follow from the past seven days…

FERRYOVER: Trained by Kevin Ryan, he really caught the eye on his racecourse bow. Slowly away at Beverley, he scythed through the pack to chase home a horse who had previous experience. He showed enough to suggest he has gears and should not be missed next time.

PARK PLACE: Not for the first time John Quinn’s five-year-old had a troubled passage but flew home once the race was all over. He is clearly on a winnable mark and with a bit more luck in running he should be getting his head in front soon.

MERRITT ISLAND: When it comes to horse racing betting, Sir Mark Prescott is always a trainer to follow and Merritt Island looks like the type of three-year-old to run up a sequence. After showing very little in three juvenile runs, she came out and won a Classified Stakes at Bath in fairly comfortable style. She runs again quickly tomorrow at Wolverhampton off the same mark and should be up to defying a penalty as long as she handles the surface.

TURTLE WATCH: Hosed up at Kelso for Jim Goldie and it would be no surprise if he reappears quickly before he is reassessed. He has an entry at Perth on Thursday.

COVERT LOVE: I loved the way this filly did the business by winning her maiden at Chelmsford. She fell out of the stalls and looked to face an impossible task. But William Buick gave her time to recover before coming wide of the field to stay on well up the straight to win. She looks like the type of progressive filly to pick up some black type later in the season and will stay further.

PADDY POWER: Richard Fahey’s juveniles are in cracking form and this one looked likely to win a warm maiden a furlong out at Ascot before getting tired. He caught the eye with how well he travelled and he should have no trouble winning his maiden.

MYSTERY CODE: Alan King does well with the few he runs on the flat and this fella stayed on very nicely under a tender ride behind a nice horse of Ralph Beckett’s at Lingfield.
